Balloon Kyphoplasty for Spinal Fracture Treatment

Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure designed to repair spinal fractures (vertebral compression fractures) by reducing and stabilizing them.

To date, balloon kyphoplasty has been used to treat more than 700,000 spinal fractures worldwide, and there are over 14,000 doctors around the world that are trained to perform the balloon kyphoplasty procedure.

Although balloon kyphoplasty is frequently used to treat spinal fracture, not all doctors are aware of its benefits. Talk to your doctor before your next spinal fracture. Early treatment could help you maintain a better quality of life.

About the KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty Procedure

The minimally invasive balloon kyphoplasty procedure involves using surgical balloons to gently elevate the fractured vertebra in an attempt to return it to its correct position. The procedure takes about an hour, and can typically be done on an outpatient basis, as determined by the physician based on the medical necessity. Many people feel pain relief immediately after the procedure and are able to return to normal activities within a few days.

Clinical Outcomes of KYPHON® Balloon Kyphoplasty Compared With Nonsurgical Care

In a study comparing balloon kyphoplasty and nonsurgical treatments for spinal fracture, it was found that balloon kyphoplasty resulted in more rapid improvement in quality of life, back function, mobility, and back pain relief than nonsurgical care. The superior treatment outcomes of balloon kyphoplasty were apparent with all measures statistically significantly different at one month. The benefits of balloon kyphoplasty were sustained on average through 12 months.1
